Stay safe with the proper gear
Whether it's on a job site or at your home workshop, it is extremely important that you always wear the proper safety gear when you're working. Every year, thousands of workers are injured or killed in industrial accidents, and even casual hobby work and home improvement projects can be very hazardous. You've got to educate yourself through safety training and always wear the proper protective equipment for the job you're doing.
Safety Products for Job Sites
Safety glasses, dust masks and hearing protection should always be worn in any setting where there is even a chance that you might come in contact with airborne debris, dust or loud noises caused by machinery or equipment. Your employer is required by law to provide you with proper safety training, and steel-toed work boots are mandatory on many job sites, but you should still be proactive about recognizing and avoiding potential dangers.
Construction safety is especially important; the construction industry has one of the highest rates of employee injuries and fatalities in the developed world. Hard hats should be worn at all times when you're on a job site, and you should take extra care when walking in areas where people are working above you; falling materials have the potential to cause very serious injuries or death.
If you're working with scaffolding, it's important that you make sure it's set on level ground with a sturdy base. Always maintain safe clearance from all power lines in the area, set up an escape ladder and only use tube-and-clamp scaffolds.
Safety Products for Your Home Workshop
At home, you should always have, at minimum, a set of safety glasses or goggles, protective work gloves, steel-toed boots and knee pads on hand. If you weld for a hobby, you must always work in a properly ventilated area and wear an industry-approved welding mask. Another safety product you should always have close at hand is a first-aid kit containing peroxide, cotton balls, gauze and surgical tape so you can disinfect and treat wounds immediately. Antibacterial ointment is also highly recommended.
Don't become a statistic; whether you're at work or at home, always follow safe working guidelines and use safety gear if the activity you're doing carries even a slight risk of injury.
