Protect your feet with steel toed boots
Work boots are a job safety requirement in many industries, from machining to construction. You should also wear safety boots if you're building home additions or performing renovation projects involving heavy materials that may fall. Safety boots not only protect your toes and the tops of your feet from falling objects, they also protect the soles of your feet from sharp objects and debris that may be on the ground at a job site.
The most popular (and safest) type of work boots are steel-toed boots. However, there are other types which you should be familiar with, in case you ever need them while performing a specific job or task. There are specialized types of boots that are uniquely designed for certain work conditions.
Types of Work Boots
Here is an overview of the different types of work boots available on the market:
- Steel toe boots. If you're working with heavy objects, these should be your boots of choice. Steel toe boots have steel-reinforced front ends that can absorb a great deal of impact.
- Insulated work boots. Should you have to perform outdoor work in cold weather, these boots offer extra warmth and protection. Insulated work boots have an additional inner layer that keep your feet warm and dry.
- Waterproof work boots. Most work boots are, by default, waterproof. However, you should be sure that yours are before you buy them, as it's always better to have work boots with this feature.
- Electrical work boots. If you work around live electrical wires or generators, electrical work boots are an excellent idea because they have the ability to resist electric shocks. Check the packaging or with the manufacturer to be sure how many volts of electricity you're protected against.
Work boots can be made from various materials, including leather, rubber and synthetic materials, or a combination of these. Typical styles include low-cut (six eyelets) and high-cut (eight eyelets).
Popular Brands of Work Boots
There are many manufacturers that make quality work boots that will provide you with excellent protection from all sorts of industrial hazards. Red Wing work boots and Caterpillar work boots are two well-known brands, but others that are equally well-made include Timberland, Ariat and Rocky. The latter three companies make both men's work boots and women's work boots.
