Wall accents from crown molding to wainscoting
A decorative molding can transform a plain, everyday room into a focal centerpiece quickly, easily and inexpensively. Crown moldings and wainscoting are dramatic draws to the eye and can be used to great effect in any room in your home. Even if you want to let your home paint or wallpaper do the talking, innocuous wall accents like baseboard moldings add a subtle touch of character and show your attention to detail.
Decorative Wall Accents
There are numerous different accents you can use to add some character to your walls. Baseboard moldings are very popular and are typically between 2 and 6 inches in height. They are almost always made of wood (or faux wood) and can be stained to match your existing décor or color scheme.
Casings are special moldings that are used to fill in gaps between doors or windows and walls. If you're looking to add some accentuation to the tops of your walls, crown moldings may be the answer. Essentially, they're baseboard moldings that run along the top of your wall and against the ceiling, rather than the bottom of your wall and against the floor.
If you want to add a splash of creativity to your walls at a middle height, consider chair railing moldings. These moldings were first developed as a means of preventing chair backs from damaging walls when leaning against them, though they are almost exclusively used for decorative purposes today. Normally, chair railing moldings are placed about 2½ feet off the floor.
Finally, ornamental corner brackets can liven up space that's left for dead more often than not. You can get steel or cast iron corner brackets that are intricately carved and beautifully designed, adding a touch of elegance to living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.
Creative Wall Coverings
If you want a decorative molding to cover the majority of a wall rather than just border the top or bottom, you can use wall panels or wainscoting. Wall panels normally come in tall strips, which are usually made of wood or a durable synthetic material. They easily attach to your wall, creating a unique and unified look in the room.
Wainscoting is a type of wall paneling that is applied only to the lower half of an interior wall, and it is typically made of tongue-and-groove wooden boards. Boiseries are wood panels that are professionally and artistically carved. They make an excellent addition to upscale homes and elegant, refined interior design motifs.
